Bio

Originally from Altadena, California, Steve Goddard Made his first prints as a child enrolled in art class at the Pasadena Art Museum. He later studied printmaking at Pasadena City College with Ben Sakoguchi; Grinnell College with Hank Klein, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design with Tom Egerman , and the University of Iowa with Mauricio Lasansky. During his career as curator of prints & drawings at the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas he gained additional technical knowledge from his colleagues and collaborators John Talleur, Michael Krueger, Yoonmi Nam, and Shawn Bitters.

In the fall of 2022 Goddard celebrated his recent retirement with the purchase of a Conrad E-15 etching press, which he named “Mehitabel,” after George Herriman’s character illustrating Don Marquis’ text, “Archie and Mehitabel.” With his curatorial hat on Goddard is a specialist in the graphic art of Northern Europe, especially in the Low Countries. He finds much inspiration in the prints of sixteenth-century Europe.

Artist Statement

This selection of photographs, prints and drawings represents some of my interests: close-up examination; human landscapes; and the surprising (charismatic, ironic, alarming) encounters between the plant world, the human world, and the realms of other animals. If there is a sub-text or an undertow to my images it may be their ability to serve as visual reminders that we are, at least for now, a species out of sync with other lifeforms. It is my hope that they also convey a love for the natural world as well as our tenuous and disruptive relationship to it.
