Over the 80 plus years of manufacturing and repairing printmaking presses, we have seen and repaired every style of printmaking press from every manufacturer of printmaking presses. Occasionally, we acquire used presses on trade-ins.

These used presses range from large floor model presses to small tabletop presses. We acquire a variety of different presses from different manufacturers including etching, lithography, combination, and monotype presses. Once we get a traded-in press, our technicians inspect, test, and rebuild the press. Then we offer it for sale as a used printmaking press.

All the used printmaking presses offered by Conrad Machine Co. are in like-new working condition. Every part on the presses is thoroughly examined and tested to insure proper working order before the used press leaves our factory.

You can be assured when you buy a used press from Conrad Machine Co., you are getting a used printmaking press that functions as if it were new.

Used Press Buying Tips

What to look for when buying a Used Press

When buying a used printmaking press, it’s important to look beyond the price and evaluate the machine carefully to avoid costly surprises later.

Press Quality & Condition

Lesser quality presses break down over time and often have design flaws that make them more prone to breaking bearings and rolls. If the used press you are looking at is not a Conrad Press, it's important to look at a few different things.

Start by examining the overall build quality, age, and current condition of the press. Check for frame integrity, smooth roller movement, even pressure, and signs of excessive wear such as rust, pitting, or misalignment. A well-maintained press should operate smoothly and feel solid under load.

Press Warranty

When buying a used press from someone other than Conrad, the used press is typically sold “as-is,” in whatever condition it may be in. Even if the press had a warranty, it will most likely not be transferable to you as the second or third owner.

That's why the Conrad used press program is so valuable. We offer a full warranty on any used Conrad-built presses that we sell because we fully inspect and/or repair each press before we sell it. We guarantee that it will last another lifetime, so you can print peacefully without having to worry about your new used press.

Hidden Costs of Buying a Used Printmaking Press

Unfortunately, many times a used printmaking press isn't as cheap as it might seem. There are numerous unexpected costs that can significantly add to the overall price of the press.

Necessary Press Repairs

If you are buying a used press on the open market, it may need some extensive repairs to get it working properly. In this regard, buying a used press may be more of a liability than an asset. When you purchase a used press through Conrad, you can have the peace of mind that we have already examined the press and done all of the repairs needed to bring the press back to good working condition.

If you are looking at a press yourself, you should inspect a few things. First, identify any repairs or replacement parts the press may need. Worn bearings, damaged rollers, or missing components can add up quickly in cost and downtime. Make sure parts are still available and consider whether you have the ability—or access to support—to service the press.

Costly Missing Parts

It's far too common for used presses to be missing important parts. The current owner may have disassembled the press to move it into to storage and lost several parts in the process like the hand cranks, press bed, or even pressure screws.

These parts can be quite costly to replace if it is even possible. Unlike other manufacturers, Conrad keeps a large supply of vintage press parts on hand. If you need a part for your used press, we may be able to help you out, but the cost may still be a factor.

Press Location

A less expensive used press might be appealing, but you have to consider where the press is located and how it will be transported.

Printmaking presses are heavy and often require specialized moving equipment. Shipping or relocation costs can significantly impact the total investment.

Used Conrad Press Warranty

All used printmaking presses that Conrad Machine Co. sells are properly setup, thoroughly inspected, and rigorously tested to be sure they are in smooth, like-new operating condition before they leave our press factory.

We are proud to offer the only used press warranty in the industry. All used Conrad-built presses (Conrad, American French Tool, Rembrandt, and Charles Brand™) that we sell will include the printmaking industry's leading 25-year warranty against defects in materials and craftsmanship.

This means that if you buy a used Conrad, American French Tool, Rembrandt, or Charles Brand™ press from Conrad Machine Co., we will warranty that used press for 25-years as if it were a new press built by Conrad Machine Co.

Presses built by other manufacturers do not carry this extensive, industry leading warranty because they are likely to break over time. Please contact our factory for more information about warranty options on used printmaking presses built by other manufacturers.

Used Printmaking Press Trade-in Program

Many printmakers need to sell their older presses to make room in their studio for their new presses. As you may know, selling your old, large floor model etching or lithography printmaking press on the open market can prove be quite difficult. Potential buyers may not be will to ship the press long distances and you may not have the resources to transport the press yourself. Not to mention—if you find a buyer, you may not be able sell it for what it's worth.

That is why Conrad Machine Co., looking to help printmakers acquire new presses, accepts traded-in presses toward the purchase of a new press. If you have an older press and would like upgrade or purchase a new press, we will allow you to trade in your old press toward the purchase a new press.

Even if your press is broken, we will accept it as a trade-in toward the purchase of a new press. We accept trade-ins on printmaking presses made by any manufacturer–not just presses built by Conrad Machine. If you have a press that you would like to trade in toward the purchase of a new press, please contact our factory for more details about our trade-in policies.
