Press Planetary Geared Reduction Drive System

Planetary Motion, Studio Devotion.

The Conrad planetary reduction drive is one of the defining features of Conrad etching presses. First developed by Conrad Machine Co. in the 1950s, this proven drive system has helped provide smooth, reliable printing for more than 65 years on thousands of Conrad presses ranging from compact 12″ tabletop models to large 50″ professional studio presses.

Inside of a Moving Conrad Gear Drive

Conrad Press Planetary Gear Drive

The Conrad planetary gear reduction drive multiplies torque while keeping the overall drive compact, controlled, and efficient. In a planetary gear drive, multiple gears work together inside a compact housing to reduce speed and increase turning power. This gives artists a smooth, comfortable print experience under the heaviest pressures.

A planetary gear drive is the best option for tabletop presses because it provides smooth, direct, controlled torque without the bulk and maintenance requirements of chain drive systems. It makes the press easier to operate, especially when printing intaglio plates that require higher pressure. Instead of fighting the press to pull heavy-pressure prints, you get a smooth, predictable pull aided by the gear drive itself.

The 6:1 gear ratio provides the ideal balance between power and speed. It gives enough torque to move the press bed comfortably while under pressure but still allows the bed to travel efficiently without feeling slow or over-geared. This makes it especially well suited for tabletop presses, where compact design and easy operation both matter.

Are All Presses Geared?

Other presses may advertise “gearing,” but that is often an advertising misnomer. Many of the presses that claim this simple install an underrated gear on a handle and another on the press roller. This setup doesn’t provide the torque or control needed for real, heavy-pressures.

Conrad is the only press company that offers a true planetary geared drive system capable of providing smooth, even printing at the highest pressures for decades of prints.

Conrad Drive Options

Hand Crank

Paired with the Conrad planetary gear reduction drive, the 10-inch polished aluminum hand crank gives you extra leverage and a comfortable grip.

The longer handle makes it easy to apply torque, while the solid aluminum build keeps everything feeling smooth, strong, and reliable with every turn.

conrad-e-12-table-top-etching-press-with-open-spoked-drive

Spoked Wheel

In place of a traditional hand crank, we offer an open spoked wheel, which provides better leverage and a more natural turning motion. Think of always pulling the spokes downward instead of the hand crank where half of your motion is upward and half is downward. This is especially helpful for artists with mobility or shoulder/wrist issues.

The larger diameter (15″ spokes equating to a 30″ wheel) and open design allow you to engage the wheel from multiple positions, making it easier to operate with less strain.

It also improves more accessibility to the press bed than an enclosed captain’s wheel while give you a smoother, more comfortable experience during longer print runs.

Enclosed Captain’s Wheel

We also offer an enclosed captain’s wheel, which gives you more control with an ergonomic 360 degree grip as compared to a hand crank.

The 20″ circular, enclosed design allows you to engage the wheel from multiple hand positions, making it easier to apply consistent force with less strain.

This drive style is especially helpful for longer print sessions, providing smoother operation, improved comfort, and better overall control.

Plus, it just looks and feels cool.

Press Models

E-12 Standard vs Deluxe

E-12 Standard

The E-12 Standard press features a direct drive system with an open spoked wheel mounted directly to the lower roll.

The 15″ spokes provide excellent leverage, allowing you to pull prints smoothly across the full width of the press bed. This model offers printmakers a more affordable press option without sacrificing any print quality.

The E-12 Standard is capable of handling a full range of printmaking pressures—from light relief printing to heavy intaglio work.

If a traditional hand crank is more your style, check out the Deluxe model.

conrad-e-12-etching-press-standard-model

E-12 Deluxe

The E-12 Deluxe press features the proprietary Conrad planetary gear reduction drive for printmakers who prefer printing with a hand crank. The 10″ crank is crafted from a solid piece of aluminum and polished to a brilliant shine.

Mounted to the upper roll, this Conrad drive system is fully enclosed giving you a compact, smooth, and effortless printing experience with a traditional handcrank.

Since a hand crank offers less leverage than a spoked wheel or captain’s wheel, additional gearing is required for printing under heavy pressure. So, if you want a hand crank, this is the press model for you.

Pressure System

Spring balanced. Perfect feel.

The pressure system is what defines how a printmaking press performs, and Conrad presses are built to deliver smooth, consistent, and highly controlled pressure with every pass.

Spring Assisted

Spring counterbalanced systems are a luxury in the world of printmaking, providing better, more consistent results with every print.

A spring counterbalanced system eliminates backlash by keeping constant tension on the upper roll. Backlash—small amounts of unwanted movement or play in the pressure screws—makes it difficult to dial in accurate pressure.

By keeping the system loaded and engaged at all times, the spring balance ensures that every adjustment on your dial is direct, immediate, and predictable, giving the printmaker better control and more consistent results.

Lesser quality presses don’t have spring assisted pressure systems because they are difficult and costly to produce, cutting corners by permanently mounting pressure screws to the bearings. This makes long-term servicing difficult and leads to inconsistent and unpredictable pressure settings.

Custom Bearing Blocks

Conrad press is the only company to make custom bearing blocks designed specifically for printmaking.

These are built to handle the unique demands of press operation, supporting smooth roller movement while maintaining alignment under pressure.

This helps the press run quieter, smoother, and more accurately over time.

Solid Square Uprights

Supporting it all are thick, solid uprights, which allow the custom bearings to ride perfectly parallel inside the press frame. This provides the structural strength needed to resist flex under load.

When pressure is applied, the frame stays rigid, allowing the rollers and bed to maintain proper alignment.

The result is even pressure across the entire printing surface and a press that performs reliably for decades.

Press Rolls

Bigger. Better.

Roll size plays a major role in how a press performs, and when it comes to printmaking, bigger rolls are better. Larger diameter rolls climb onto the plate more gradually, reducing harsh transitions and allowing the press to move smoothly over plates, blankets, and paper, resulting in more consistent pressure application and greater overall control.

Conrad E-12 Upper Roll Options

Standard 3″ Roll – Solid Steel

Conrad presses offer a 3″ standard upper roll, which provides strong, reliable performance for a wide range of printmaking techniques.

The standard roll is crafted from a solid piece of steel to create maximum pressure without deflecting (bending under pressure). The thick 1.5″ bearing shafts give our rolls the ultimate rigidity to stand up to the extreme pressure the press is known to produce.

It’s a solid choice for the general studio use, capable of handling everything from relief to intaglio work with consistent results.

conrad-e-12-etching-press-standard-roll

Oversized 5.5″ Roll – Solid Aluminum

For printmakers who want the highest level of performance, we also offer a 5.5″ oversized upper roll. The larger diameter makes a noticeable difference when printing under pressure, helping the press glide more smoothly across the plate.

Our oversized roll is precision machined from high-strength, solid aluminum, making it lighter than steel with the benefit of being corrosion free. Its solid, one-piece design is rugged and holds up the printing pressures similar to steel without deflecting or denting. It improves consistency, especially on larger plates or heavier setups, and gives the printmaker more confidence and control with every pass.

Whether you choose the standard or oversized option, Conrad rolls are designed to deliver smooth operation, even pressure, and professional-quality results.

Micro-Gauge Dials

Precise Pressure. Naturally.

One of the most sought after options we offer is the micrometer gauge. Conrad tabletop presses are offered with micrometer gauges to give printmakers precise control over roller height and pressure. Instead of guessing or relying on feel alone, micrometers allow you to dial in exact, repeatable settings for different plates, papers, and techniques.

The micrometer gauge provides easy-to-repeat, precise settings. Our gauge is a barrel thimble type that is calibrated to .005 inch per line. This means you can adjust each pressure screw by about the same thickness as a human hair! The Conrad Machine Co. micro-gauges are the very best in the printmaking industry.

conrad-e-12-table-top-etching-press-with-micro-gauges

Each adjustment is clearly measured, making it easy to return to the same pressure for edition printing or to make small, controlled changes when refining a print. This is especially important when switching between processes like intaglio, relief, or monotype, where plate thicknesses and pressure settings vary.

Micrometer gauges also help ensure even pressure across the press, reducing the chance of one side printing heavier than the other. For print media where precision and efficiency matter, micrometers add a level of control that improves consistency, saves time, and helps printmakers achieve more reliable results.

Conrad Press is the only company that gives artists the option to configure their presses with or without micrometer gauges.

Some artists prefer not to have gauges because they only print one size/thickness of plate and rarely need to change the pressure settings. Also, setting the pressure by feel without gauges gives the printmaker a more connected and intimate experience with their press during the printing process. Thus, we give artists the option to customize their presses for their printing needs.

Non-micro gauge pressure screws are equipped with a locking nut, so printmakers can set the pressure and lock it in place for future printing.

Press Frame

Engineered. Robust.

The E-12 press base is formed from heavy gauge steel riveted and bolted together (similar to airplane construction) to form a sturdy box section that is resistant to twisting and tipping. Unlike lesser quality table top presses, the E-12 press frame base extends the full length (24 inches) of the bed plate.

conrad-e12-tabletop-intaglio-press-frame

The vertical frame uprights are custom machined from thick, solid square aluminum and bolted to the frame in complete parallelism giving the press extreme rigidity and precise pressure capabilities.

The frame, pressure screw, bearing block and lower roll adjusting screw all share a common centerline to eliminate twisting or bending of the frame under high printing pressure.

Press Bearings

Effortlessly Smooth Printing.

The Conrad E-12 press uses large 1.5 inch diameter roll bushings to properly lubricate the rolls while under heavy pressure.

These high-quality, anti-friction bushings have a lower coefficient of friction than traditional bronze bushings and are rated at well over five times the maximum pressure encountered in normal printing!

Our high-tech bushings are pressed into bespoke bearing blocks designed specifically for printmaking. This combination has proven to provide smooth and easy operation under the most severe printing conditions for over half a century.

Printmaking Felt Blankets

Felt blankets are essential for proper intaglio printing because they help distribute pressure evenly across the plate and paper. High-quality blankets allow the paper to be pushed into the recessed lines of the plate, improving detail and ink transfer.

Using the right blanket set also protects both the plate and the press while ensuring consistent results across every print. A good set of blankets is one of the most important tools in achieving professional-quality prints.

Registration Grid & Protective Bed Cover

A registration grid and protective bed cover help keep your printing process accurate and your press in good condition. The grid makes it easier to align plates and paper consistently, which is especially important for multi-layer prints or editions.

At the same time, the protective bed cover shields the press bed from scratches, ink, and wear, helping preserve its flatness and longevity. Together, they improve both workflow and equipment protection.
